Until recently, with very limited exceptions, barristers were only able to undertake work on the instructions of a solicitor.
There are now two routes by which barristers can accept instructions from clients or other intermediaries without a solicitor becoming involved.
The Licensed Access route allows those who are licensed by the Bar Standards Board to instruct barristers directly. Licence-holders are typically members of non-legal professions or major users of legal services. Further information on Licensed Access can be found by clicking on this link to the Bar Council’s website.
The Public Access route allows all clients, even if not licence-holders, to instruct certain barristers directly. Further information on Public Access can be found by clicking on this link to the Bar Council’s website.
All members of Radcliffe Chambers accept instructions under the Licensed Access route, and some also do so under the Public Access route.
If you are considering instructing a member of Chambers using either of these routes, please contact a member of our clerking team. We prefer you not to contact the barrister directly in the first instance, as our clerks deal with all enquiries about new work.
